The Wayne State University men's basketball team was ranked fifth in the GLIAC South Division in the 2008-09 GLIAC Preseason Media Poll.
Four significant changes to the GLIAC in 2008-09: (1) Double round-robin regular-season schedule of 22 league games; (2) Top eight teams regardless of division qualify for the post-season tournament; (3) Northwood moves from the North Division to the South Division; and (4) Tiffin joins the GLIAC and will play in the South Division following the departure of Gannon and Mercyhurst to the PSAC.
