GAME #1 STORYLINES

Wayne State began its 2008-09 campaign with a 59-36 exhibition loss at Iowa.

In WSU's first visit to Iowa City since the 1956 NCAA Division I Sweet Sixteen, the Warriors raced out to a 10-2 lead four minutes into the contest.

After 11 straight points by the Hawkeyes, WSU regrouped and knotted the score at 20. Iowa scored the final eight points of the first half as WSU missed eight field goal attempts and had two turnovers.

Justin Sample split a pair from the foul line just over a minute into the second half, but Iowa scored the next six points and the Warriors never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Shane Lawal led WSU with 13 points and eight rebounds, with Bryan Wright adding 12 points and four assists.

The Warriors shot 31.9 percent (15-47) from the floor compared to 40.4 percent (19-47) for the Hawkeyes. Anthony Tucker scored a game-high 21 points including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc for the hosts.

Both teams had 10 turnovers, with Iowa holding a 35-30 edge on the boards.

This Saturday's game versus Marygrove starts a stretch of four home games in the next five matches.

Wayne State is 7-0 in home openers under Greer and 4-3 in season openers. WSU has won 17 consecutive home openers since a 100-95 overtime setback to St. Mary's on Nov. 21, 1990.

The lone road trip for WSU is down I-75 on Nov. 20 to Bowling Green. The homestand concludes as the Warriors host Michigan Tech (Dec. 4) and Northern Michigan (Dec. 6) in the first weekend of GLIAC play.

A visit to Eastern Michigan on Dec. 8 will be WSU's final non-league game of the regular season, and start a stretch of four road contests with only one home game (Dec. 11 vs. Northwood) in 30 days.

The GLIAC regular-season schedule and post-season format have changed dramatically from last year. The regular season consists of 22 games (double round-robin), while the top eight teams qualify for the GLIAC tournament regardless of division.

IN THE POLLS

Wayne State was tabbed for fifth in the GLIAC South Division by the media.

WSU VERSUS MARYGROVE

This will be the fourth meeting between the two Detroit area schools.

The Warriors won the first meeting, 107-63, on Jan. 10, 2005 and claimed a 113-45 triumph on Nov. 22, 2005.

Herb Goliday and Morris Hall each had 26 points in the first win with Tariq Mills adding 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

The following year Jeffrey Ferguson led five double figure scorers with 27 points. Kris Krzyminski chipped in 12 points and eight assists.

Last year, WSU recorded a 110-67 win on Nov. 15 (the date of this year's contest as well).

Lorenzo McClelland scored a game-high 22 points and dished out four assists as six Warriors scored in double figures.
