GAME #2 STORYLINES
Wayne State commenced its 2008-09 regular-season schedule with an 89-59 triumph over Marygrove College, an NAIA school in metro Detroit.
After the Mustangs took a 10-8 lead, the Warriors answered with a 13-5 run over the next four minutes including a conventional three-point play by freshman Dale Brundidge and three-pointer by junior Bryan Wright on back-to-back possessions.
Marygrove would come within four at 23-19 with just over eight minutes remaining before intermission, but Wayne State responded with an 8-1 run over the next 2:30.
After the Mustangs had pulled within eight at 32-24, the Warriors outscored the visitors 14-2 over the final 5:26 of the first half.
Wright led all scorers with 12 points at halftime.
The closest Marygrove would come in the second half would be 18 points (54-36) following a three-pointer by Nick Roberts.
Wright scored a game-high 24 points, with Shane Lawal adding 20 points on 9-of-11 from the floor. Junior Bryan Edwards had 18 points, while Reggie Stallings grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
The contest at BGSU will be a homecoming for WSU head coach David Greer, who played for the Falcons from 1979-83. He is still Bowling Green's and the Mid-American Conference's all-time assist leader.
After Thursday's road trip down I-75 to Bowling Green, WSU will open a three-game homestand as it hosts Central State (Nov. 25), Michigan Tech (Dec. 4) and Northern Michigan (Dec. 6). The later two contests are the first weekend of GLIAC play.
A visit to Eastern Michigan on Dec. 8 will be WSU's final non-league game of the regular season, and start a stretch of four road contests with only one home game (Dec. 11 vs. Northwood) in 30 days.
The GLIAC regular-season schedule and post-season format have changed dramatically from last year. The regular season consists of 22 games (double round-robin), while the top eight teams qualify for the GLIAC tournament regardless of division.
IN THE POLLS
Wayne State was tabbed for fifth in the GLIAC South Division by the media.
Bowling Green was selected third in the MAC East Division by the MAC News Media Association.
ON THE BENCH
David Greer enters his eighth season at WSU and ninth season as a collegiate head coach. His WSU mark stands at 101-93, while his overall record is 118-105.
Louis Orr is in his second season at the helm of the Falcon basketball program.
WSU VERSUS BOWLING GREEN
The teams first met during the 1923-24 season, the first year that Detroit Junior College had become the Colleges of the City of Detroit (CCD).
CCD won both meetings that year -- 31-15 and 32-27.
The following year (1924-25), Bowling Green won twice -- 24-18 and 28-23.
BG recorded two wins during the 1930-31 season -- 17-15 and 35-24.
The Falcons won 33-31 during the 1932-33 campaign, and 35-29 the following season (1933-34).
The last regular-season meeting between the two schools took place on Dec. 17, 1942 with BGSU claiming a 64-41 victory over Wayne University.
