Sheila Taormina, a Livonia native, joined the Wayne State fencing program as a volunteer assistant coach in the fall of 2007 and served for one season.

Taormina received her bachelor's degree in business from the University of Georgia in 1992 and her master's in business from Georgia in 1994.

She was a member of the 1996 Gold Medal winning 4x200 swimming freestyle relay team in Atlanta. At the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney she placed sixth in the women's triathlon.

Taormina also competed in the triathlon at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and won the women's senior division of the modern pentathlon at the 2005 Pan American Championships.

During her undergraduate years at Georgia, she was an 11-time All-American and a four-time Academic All-American. She also received both the SEC and NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.

She is a 2008 U.S. Olympic hopeful in pentathlon and would become the first U.S. Olympian to compete in three sports, if she qualifies.
