DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's fencing squad began the duals portion of its 2007-08 schedule compiling an 0-3 Sunday at the Detroit Mercy Duals.
The Warriors suffered setbacks to Detroit (18-8), Michigan State (17-10), and Michigan (23-4). WSU was hampered by having just one competitor in the epee which forced the Warriors to forfeit 17 bouts in the three duals.
Freshman Jakub Gibczynski (Lodz, Poland) compiled a 9-0 record in the men's sabre. Also competing in the sabre were redshirt freshman Andrew Opalewski (Macomb, Mich./Utica Eisenhower) and sophomore Patrick Tomlinson (Marysville). Opalewski had a 2-7 mark, with Tomlinson earning one win in nine bouts.
In foil competition, sophomore Michal Brichacek (Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph's) had a 3-6 mark. Peter Franko was 1-8.
WSU had just one competitor in the epee -- Joe Fresard, who compiled a 3-5 record.
The Warriors will be idle until competing in the New York University Duals on Saturday, Jan. 26.
