DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's fencing team compiled a 1-2 record yesterday at the University of Detroit Mercy Duals.
The Warriors began the day with a 14-13 setback to Michigan. WSU held a 6-3 lead after the sabre with Bobby Smith winning twice. The Wolverines won all nine foil bouts, with Wayne State responding by winning seven epee bouts. Slava Zingerman went 3-0, while Steve Znoy and Marek Petraszek each had 2-1 records.
WSU recorded a 19-8 triumph over Michigan State in the second round. Smith won all three of his sabre bouts, with Patrick Tomlionson having two wins. Brandon Isaac led the foil team with two victories. The Warrior epee trio of Zingerman, Znoy and Petraszek combined for a 9-0 mark.
In the final round, Detroit edged Wayne State 14-13. Smith won twice in the sabre, but Michal Brichacek had a victory, WSU's only triumph, in the foil. Zingerman and Petraszek each went 3-0 in the epee, with Znoy winning twice.
