Jakub Gibczynski picked up his first career individual title to lead the men's fencing team at Istvan Danosi/Michigan Open

DETROIT - Freshman Jakub Gibczynski (Lodz, Poland/Lodz) picked up his first career individual title to lead the Wayne State University fencing team at Istvan Danosi/Michigan Open Sunday afternoon at the Matthaei Gym.

In the men's sabre event, Gibczynski defeated Michigan's Blake Rowley with Nick Piotek from Michigan State placing third. WSU sophomore Patrick Tomlinson (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) and redshirt freshman Andrew Opalewski (Macomb, Mich./Utica Eisenhower) finished 11th and 12th respectively while Peter Franko placed 16th.

Michigan State's Eric Carlson took first place honors defeating U-M's Barruad Guillaume in the epee event. MSU's Markus Bahr fished third with WSU freshman David Lockhart (Troy, Mich./Troy) placing 9th.

Wayne State graduate student Nick Stephanoff placed fifth in the foil event while sophomore Brandon Isaac (Taylor, Mich./Truman) redshirt sophomore Michal Brichacek (Livonia, Mich./U-of-D Jesuit) finished 7th and 9th respectively. Detroit's Craig Budzynski clamed the individual title defeating U-M's Dave Baron with UD's Brad Coon placing third.
