Men's Fencing Preparing For Midwest Conference Championship

The Wayne State University men's fencing squad returns to action this Saturday at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, hosted by Notre Dame on Feb. 25.

The Warriors will compete against fencers from Ohio State, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Michigan State, Cleveland State, Lawrence, Michigan, Detroit Mercy, Case Western Reserve and Chicago. The men's squad finished the regular season with a 6-14 record

Junior Marek Petraszek finished season with impressive 47-8 record in the epee. Petraszek will be one of the favorites for the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championship title. Classmate Steve Znoy had good season posting 20-35 record. Freshman Matt Crist will make his MFC debut after posting a 17-38 record during the regular season..

WSU's lone competitor in the foil will be senior Joe Langdorf, who will try to improve upon last year's MFC appearance when he finished 26th. Langdorf finished the 2005-06 regular season with a 23-33 ledger.

Sabre junior Bobby Smith will try to defend his third place finish from 2005 at the MFC. Smith finished season with 33-24 record. Junior Marshall McClendon finished his first season on the WSU fencing team with a 14-19 record. McClendon recorded impressive victories over St. John's Tsuhlo (Russian National Team) and Detroit's Jelinek ('05 NCAA All-American). Fellow junior Ryan Ferrante posted 15-42 record and will try to improve upon last year's 26th place.

An impressive collection of fencing talent will compete at the 2006 MFC, notably OSU epeeists Dennis Tolkachev (NCAA '04, '05 First Team All-American), Christiano Riviera (NCAA '05 All-American), ND fellow epeeists Karol Kostka and Aaron Adjemian (NCAA '05 participant). Other fencers to watch include: OSU sabre tandem Adam Crompton ('04, '05 NCAA Champion) and Jason Rogers ('03, '04, '05 All-American and 2004 United States Olympic Team member), OSU foil fencer Boaz Ellis ('04, '05 NCAA Champion) and ND foilist Jakub Jedrkowiak ('05 NCAA All-American).
