Three members of the Wayne State University men's fencing squad participated in the 35th annual Garret Open hosted by the Penn State University on Sunday, November 5th.
In epée, senior Marek Petraszek won the title defeating Jason Henderson of Rutgers in the final bout 15-8. Before that, Henderson defeated Wayne State University's newcomer Slava Zingerman 15-12 in a quarterfinal bout.
On his way to the top, Marek Petraszek, who had an 11-3 overall record, won versus Princeton's Max Peck 15-12, 15-9 over Ohio State University's Ukrainian newcomer Michail Mazur and defeated University of Notre Dame's Aaron Adjemian 15-10.
Freshman Slava Zingerman was ranked first after the third pool round. He had a 14-1 overall record. After his 15-12 victory over Harvard's Billy Stallings, he lost 15-12 to Jason Henderson of Rutgers and finished fifth.
In sabre, senior Bobby Smith placed 19th. Although he seemed to be focused the whole day through, he could not make it out of the third pool round.
Wayne State's next competition will be Sunday, December 3 when it hosts the Istvan Danosi/Michigan Open at the Matthaei Athletic Complex.
