Zingerman National Champion For Second Straight Year

The Wayne State University fencing teams finished in ninth place with 66 victories at the 2008 NCAA Championship hosted by The Ohio State University. WSU sophomore Slava Zingerman won his second consecutive national title by defeating Penn State's Arth Urman 15-7 in the national championship bout. Zingerman, the No. 3 seed after the 23 round-robin bouts, defeated Stanley Vaksman from St. John's 15-8 in a semifinal bout. (more)

Fencing Moves Into Eighth Place

The Wayne State University fencing teams (men's and women's combined) are in eighth place after the third day of the 2008 NCAA Championship being hosted by The Ohio State University. WSU sophomore Slava Zingerman, the defending national champion, is in second place in the men's epee after compiling a 10-4 record during Saturday's four rounds. The final three rounds (nine bouts) will be contested on Sunday. (more)

Three Men's Fencers Competed At NCAA Regional

Three members of the Wayne State University men's fencing team competed on Sunday at the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by the University of Detroit. In the men's sabre, freshman Jakub Gibczynski placed fourth to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Defending NCAA Champion Slava Zingerman finished fourth in the men's epee to secure his automatic bid, while Joe Fresard placed 14th. (more)
