Sherrell Rowland joined the Wayne State football staff in March 2008 to serve as the tight ends coach.

Before joining the WSU staff, Rowland taught physical education in the Detroit Public School system for over 38 years before retiring in 2008.

He served as the head football coach at Cass Tech for 11 years (1985-95) compiling a 70-32 record. He also was the head coach for one season at Pershing.

He led the Technicians to their first city championships in 1994 and 1995 and the state playoffs four times. CTHS was the city runner-up in both 1987 and 1990. He was selected as regional coach of the Year in 1994 and 1995 as well as the Detroit News Coach of the Year in 1990. In addition, Cass Tech's program was ranked in the top 50 high school programs in Michigan during his tenure.

Rowland also served as an assistant coach at Henry Ford, Chadsey, and Southfield-Lathrup.

A 1972 Wayne State University graduate, Rowland also earned his master's degree from WSU in 1980.

Rowland, a Detroit Central High School graduate, lives in Detroit with his wife Carolyn, a WSU alumnus, and their son Brook.
