POST GAME QUOTES FROM THE WAYNE STATE LOCKER ROOM
WSU Head Coach Paul Winters:
"If you could draw up a way to give me heartburn and make me miserable and still win a game, this was the way to go. Matt Shango makes two stupid penalties, maybe three stupid penalties, jumps offsides, makes a late hit, then he gets a sack that wins the game. He's got to eliminate those other three and it becomes an easier game to win. We'll go back and feel good about ourselves for 24 hours, come out tomorrow, and get some of these mistakes corrected and get ready to play Saginaw (Valley)."
"Offensively we couldn't sustain a drive. We have to sustain drives. Offensively, I don't think we were very prepared. I'm not happy with our plan, I'm not happy with our execution."
"We've got some good players on defense. I've been saying that for a couple of years. I love our coaching staff, I love what they've done with those guys, and I think we'll just continue to get better."
-- On a "poor" game:
"I did have a poor game in my opinion, probably in everyone's opinion. It's a good thing for me to have a bad game and still get the win because it proves we are a team and not just one person."
-- On starting the season with a win:
We got it going. Hopefully we can come back next week and take it.
-- On his touchdown catch:
"It felt good. I don't even know how to explain it. I felt happier that we went up after I made that catch. I'm excited for the team, getting this win and starting out this season right."
-- On the defense making stops in pressure situations:
"It felt good. Our defense really showed up. To see them do that gives us a lot more confidence going into the weeks coming up."
-- On his touchdown catch:
"I got yelled at for putting the ball out prematurely before I passed the goal lines. I'm going to have to work on that. I have to make sure I keep it in high and tight."
--On the 93-yard kickoff return
"I've gotta give it up to the other 10 guys on the field. I didn't even get touched. It was clean blocking."
"We were really impressed, really happy about the brand new defense that we have in place. It felt like we could be more aggressive, do a couple of different things. We were really excited to get this game started, probably since a couple of weeks back, just so we could show that we're here and we're ready."
-- On coming back after a few penalties:
"I just want to thank my coaches and my teammates for giving me a second chance. You just have to wipe the slate clean, come back and play hard."
-- On only giving up 10 points (gave up 58 points last year vs. Mercyhurst):
"We have a new defense this year that helps us play faster. The defensive line is playing a lot better along with the defensive backs and linebackers."
-- Last year, the Warriors lost four games when having the lead in the fourth quarter. On how he feels about holding them this time:
"The only way you're going to win is if you're strong and play clutch. Everyone is playing hard; everyone wants it this year."
