Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University football team (1-2 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) dropped a 58-50 triple overtime decision at Mercyhurst College (3-1 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors led 21-3 early in the second period but the host Lakers scored 20 of the next 27 points for a 29-28 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

After MC went ahead 36-28 with 1:50 remaining on a Richad Stokes four-yard run, WSU went 57 yards in seven plays with Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) hauling in a five-yard touchdown pass from Mickey Berce (Dearborn, Mich.) with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.

Both teams scored seven points in the first overtime with Bell scoring on a 13-yard run. In the second overtime stanza, Bell had a two-yard touchdown run but Mercyhurst scored seven points of its own to knot the game at 50.

In the third overtime, the Lakers scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass and WSU was unable to convert on a fourth-and-goal from the MC four.

Bell rushed for 227 yards on 44 carries with four touchdowns. Along with his touchdown reception, broke the school record with five touchdowns in a game.

Ed Sanders led the WSU receiving corps with five catches for 108 yards and his first collegiate touchdown on a tipped ball late in the opening period.

Wayne State returns home to face Findlay next Saturday with kickoff slated for noon.
