DETROIT - In the annual spring football game, the Wayne State offense defeated the defense 51-47 on Saturday afternoon at Adams Field.
The offense scored points with touchdowns (6), PAT (1), field goals (3) and first downs (1). Meanwhile, the defense accumulated points by turnovers (4), stop on fourth down (2), force a punt (1), and three and out (4). The defense led 24-14 at halftime.
The offense scored touchdowns:
-- 51-yard pass from Mickey Berce to Ed Sanders;
-- 9-yard pass from Zack George to Troy Burrell;
-- 48-yard pass from Zack George to Travis Campbell;
-- 50-yard pass from Mickey Berce to Aaron Higginbottom;
-- 26-yard run by Neil Mitchell.
Neil Mitchell led the rushing attack with 40 yards on five carries. Daryl Graham added 26 yards on seven attempts, while Joique Bell had 17 yards on seven carries. Keman Jacobs had a team-high nine rushing attempts.
Zack George completed 14 of 24 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Mickey Berce completed 15 of 24 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.
Twelve different players had receptions in the spring game: Troy Burrell had a game-high five catches for 33 yards and one score; Ed Sanders (4-107, 1 TD); Aaron Higginbottom (3-72, 1 TD); Travis Campbell (3-77, 1 TD); Neil Mitchell (3-26); Joique Bell (3-29); Daryl Graham (2-12); David Mosley (2-26); Russell Hughes (1-14); Chris Ratcliff (1-3); Marcus Watkins (1-1); and Keman Jacobs (1-0).
The lone turnover by the defense was an interception by Alex Jachym. Other key contributors on defense were Zachary Easterly (2-5--7); Jordan Miller (5-2--7); Jeremy Jones (1-6--7); Bruno Shkreli (3-2--5); Raleigh Ross (2-3--5); Jon Robinson (2-3--5); Matt Shango (1-4--5); Dante Dunn (4-0--4); Kenny Loney (3-1--4); Tristan Black (2-2--4); Andrew Bates (3-0--3); Myles McNichols (3-0--3); Cornelius Dillard (2-1--3); Jason Thomas (2-1--3).
Wayne State opens the 2008 campaign with a non-conference game at home on August 30 versus Mercyhurst. Kickoff at Adams Field is scheduled for noon.
