The following feature on the tight ends is the fifth installment of position by position on the Wayne State football program.

The tight end group has significant playing experience. Juniors John Rehberg, Kenny Schmidt and Dale Knuth have all seen considerable playing time the last two years.

"We have two very good starters in John Rehberg and Kenny Schmidt," said head coach Paul Winters. "They show up every day with their hard hats ready to work. We are counting on their leadership and experience. We moved Michael Finch to the position to provide another big body on the edge. Dale Knuth is the ultimate Warrior as he returns from a devastating leg injury in 2005. This is a good position for us."

Tight ends coach John O'Connor gave us his thoughts on each of his players (alphabetically) for the upcoming campaign:

Michael Finch (r-So., Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) appeared in two games at right tackle in 2005. "Mike made a smooth transition to tight end from the offensive line this past spring. He should continue to develop and will contribute this fall."

Dale Knuth (r-Jr., Canton, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child) is a two-time GLIAC All-Academic team selection. "Dale has shown incredible heart and determination as he continues to recover from the injury he sustained last fall. The progress he has made is an inspiration to the entire football program."

John Rehberg (r-Jr., Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson) has started 14 games at tight end over the last two seasons. "John is everything you want in a tight end -- strong, athletic and intense. I expect big things from him this year."

Kenny Schmidt (r-Jr., Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) started five games last year at tight end. "Ken has had a great summer building off the strides he made in the spring. He will make huge contributions to our offense and special teams this season."
