July 30, 2007

Bay City, Mich. - The Wayne State University football squad was ranked fifth in the GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) pre-season coaches poll released today in conjunction with the league's annual football media day.

WSU's fourth-place finish a year ago was the highest since the 1994 team also finished tied for fourth. The 1983 squad, which placed third, was the previous best finish over the past 23 years.

The GLIAC's 13 head coaches participated in the balloting, but were not allowed to vote for their own team. The first-place team on each ballot received 12 points, while the second-place squad received 11 points, etc.

The Warriors, after being tabbed for ninth in 2006, went 3-2 both at home and on the road to finish in a tie for fourth.
