![]() Joique Bell and your Warriors lost to the Chargers in 2007 (35-21) |
Oct. 25, 2008
An interception by Dunn (his third of the season) with less than two minutes left in the game sealed the win for your Warriors. The last time the Wayne State won five straight home games was during the 1983 and 1984 season when they actually won eight straight. Your Warriors hope to continue their winning streak at Northwood University in Midland, Mich. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. As announcer Bobb Vergiels would say, "Hey Wayne State, How about your Warriors!"
With less than five minutes left in today's game, the Warriors pick up their offensive efforts carrying the ball all the way to the Charger 21-yard-line. After an 11-yard run by Bell, the Warriors are at the Charger two. Bell carries the ball the remainder of the way to put six points on the board for the Warriors. The touchdown was his second of the day. The extra point is good and the Warriors take the lead 14-7.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the score remains 7-7. Both teams have struggled to get anywhere offensively due to strong defensive efforts on both sides. Before today's game, Bell, a junior, needed 60 yards to tie Joe Gough (1991-1994) for the most rushing yards in Wayne State University football history. With 12:29 left in the game, Bell surpassed Gough for WSU's all time rushing record with a 25 yard run.
Four minutes into the second half, the Chargers are inside the Warrior 5-yard-line, but can't hang onto the ball. Black recovered the fumble and handed it off to Dunn who ran it to the 15. The Warriors maintain a long offensive charge, but fail to get the ball in the end zone. Hillsdale will take over offensively at their own 28-yard-line.
Both teams head back to the locker room to discuss strategy for the second half while the Junior Walker's All-Stars continue to perform for the crowd. Kids, dressed in their Halloween costumes, parade around the track while Warrior athletes pass out candy. Meanwhile, we all wait for the second half to begin.
The Warrior offense continues to struggle at the start of the second quarter. They made one appearance in Hillsdale territory in the first 15:00 minutes of play. The Chargers attempt another offensive run, but once again the Warrior defense prevails. With 4:53 left in the half, quarterback Kevin Smith (8) completed a 23-yard pass to Ed Sanders (86) at the 18. Bell carries the ball into the end zone to put six points on the board for your Warriors. After a successful extra point attempt, the game is tied 7-7.
Captains Joique Bell (5), Dante Dunn (21), Tristan Black (51) and Andrew Bates (96) take center field to decide the start of today's game. Hillsdale won the toss and deferred the decision to Wayne State who have will start on the receiving end. With 7:35 left in the first quarter, The Chargers surpass the Warrior defense for a touchdown. The extra point is good and the Chargers take the lead 7-0.
Thirty minutes before game time The Wayne State University Warriors and the Hillsdale College Chargers are warming up on the field. Meanwhile, the Junior Walker's All-Stars serenade the fans with various Motown hits from the sixties. The Warriors are hoping to grab their third win in a row and seventh of the season. The Chargers are coming off of a 49-25 win over Northern Michigan. Let's hope the Warrior defense can hold of the motivated Chargers on this extremely windy day
