Marquette, Mich. - The Wayne State University golf team began its fall campaign with mixed results. The squad is in fifth place after the opening day of the 2006 Northern Michigan Invitational with a score of 310. Redshirt junior Ryan Johnson (New Boston, Mich./Huron) is the leader after 18 holes with a 71.
The competition is taking place at the Marquette Golf Club's new Greywalls Course.
Team Standings after Day One:
1. Grand Valley State University 297
2. Northern Michigan University 305
2. Northwood University 305
4. University of Findlay 307
5. Wayne State University 310
In addition to Johnson's 71, freshman Bryan Lynch (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) shot a 79 in his first collegiate tournament.
Seniors Joe Wilson (Trenton, Mich.) and Lance Chamberlain (Allen Park, Mich.) each carded an 80.
Redshirt freshman Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) shot an 81, while newcomer Brett Hudson had an 87.
The final 18 holes will be played on Sunday.
