ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Wayne State golf team finished just six strokes off the lead in third place at the Grand Valley State Invitational on Monday, posting a two-round score of 604 at The Meadows Golf Course.
The Warriors, after totaling a seventh-place score of 313 in the first round of the event, came back to shoot 291 in the second round, the best team score of the day, to move up to third. GVSU's Blue squad (303-295--598) and Ferris State (299-301--600) finished ahead of Wayne State, while Saginaw Valley State (303-303--606) and Findlay (299-314--613) claimed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Medalist Bryan Lynch (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) was instrumental in WSU's comeback, shooting 147 including a second-round score of 70, four strokes under his previous personal best.
Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) tied for eighth (77-73--150), Ryan Johnson (New Boston, Mich./Huron) tied for 18th (79-74--153), and Brett Hudson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's) finished in a tie for 24th (80-74--154). Eric Johnson posted a score of 161 (84-77) to tie for 44th.
Playing individually were Jack Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) who tied for 33rd (79-79--158) and Michael Wouters (Sterling Hts., Mich./Henry Ford II) who tied for 38th (84-75--159).
Wayne State will play in the first Great Lakes Regional event of the season beginning Sunday, Sept. 23 at HawksHead Golf Course in South Haven.
