DETROIT - Wayne State University head golf coach Mike Horn has announced that two prospective student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent this past winter and will enroll at WSU in the fall.

Alex LaSerra, a native of Jackson and graduate of Napoleon High School, was a four-year golf letterwinner for the Pirates. He earned district and regional titles in 2008, and carded a 176 (77-79) at the 2008 MHSAA Division 3 state championship. LaSerra received all-conference and all-area recognition every season and served as team captain for three years. A four-sport athlete at Napoleon, LaSerra also lettered in basketball, cross country and track and field.

Todd Spangler is a graduate of Grand Ledge High School, where he helped the Comets to four straight second-place league finishes. He shot a 163 (85-78) at the 2009 MHSAA Division 2 state championship at Michigan State's Forest Akers West a year after posting a 157 (81-76) at the 2008 state tournament at The Meadows (Grand Valley State's home course). He averaged a score of 76 for 18 holes (39 for 9) as a junior and was named to the Lansing State Journal Dream Team in 2008. Spangler was a multiple-time all-area, all-league, and team MVP selection. The Grand Ledge native, who also served as team captain, lettered in football and basketball as well.

"I really think our 2009 recruiting class will help us during the next four to five years. We have added depth and talent," said Horn. "There will be a learning curve for this class as we are now competing at the highest level. These very talented players will need to continue to develop their short games and learn to trust their skills under pressure.

"The 2009-2010 season will be another very competitive year within the GLIAC. I think we will be right in the mix from the outset."

LaSerra and Spangler, along with fall signee Josh Mitroka, will join the Warriors as they begin the 2009-10 season in September.
