Warrior Golfer To Tee It Up At 2006 Western Amateur Championship

Wayne State University golfer Ryan Johnson will be competing in the 104th Western Amateur Championship on August 2 and 3 at Point O'Woods G. & C.C. in Benton Harbor, Mich.

The nation's top amateur golfers will be playing 18 holes each day on Wednesday and Thursday followed by a cut to the low 50 scores and ties. The players making the cut will play 36 holes on Friday, with the low 16 qualifying for match play on Saturday. The championship match will be held on Sunday, August 6.

Defending champion Jamie Lovemark, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., and 2006 NCAA champion Jonathan Moore, of Vancouver, Wash., lead an elite field of the world's top amateur golfers, including 11 of the Western Amateur "Sweet 16" match play qualifiers from 2005.

Past champions of the Western Amateur include Jack Nicklaus (1961), Tom Weiskopf (1963), Ben Crenshaw (1973), Phil Mickelson (1991) and Tiger Woods (1994).

Johnson starts at the No. 10 tee at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday and tees off at No. 1 at 12:20 p.m.

He was one of 18 golfers to qualify at Monday's 18-hole round at Lake Michigan Hills G.C. in Benton Harbor by shooting a 70.
