Chris Luongo completed his second season as an assistant coach for the Wayne State men's hockey team in 2007-08.

A native of Fraser, Luongo was drafted in the fifth round (92nd overall pick) by the Detroit Red Wings after a solid year in the junior NAHL in 1984-85. Accepting a scholarship to Michigan State, Luongo played four years with the Spartans and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 1987 and the CCHA All-League Second Team in 1989. He also earned the team's Dr. John Downs Outstanding Defensive Player Award in 1988 and 1989.

Luongo spent most of his first three professional seasons in the minor leagues, recording 25 assists for the Adirondack Red Wings of the AHL in 1990-91. He got his first taste of the NHL that season as well, playing in four games with Detroit. He signed a free agent deal with Ottawa in 1992 and played 76 games for the expansion Senators.

He was then dealt to the New York Islanders, where he played 121 games over two seasons. Luongo was also a member of the U.S. squad at the 1996 World Championships.

After scoring a career-high 45 points (10 goals, 35 assists) for the IHL's Milwaukee Admirals in 1996-97, Luongo spent seven years in Germany, playing for four different DEL teams in that span, with a brief stint in the IHL's now-defunct Detroit Vipers organization in 1998-99. He rejoined the U.S. team for the World Championships in 1997 and 2000.

Luongo resides in Farmington Hills with his wife, Cheryl, and their two sons, Anthony (8) and Christopher (3).
