BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Wayne State men's hockey team surrendered four unanswered goals, including three in the third period, and suffered a 7-5 loss at 18th-ranked Bemidji State on Saturday night.

Despite scoring five goals, their highest total against the Beavers since recording a 6-4 win on Nov. 23, 2004, the Warriors were unable to hold off the late onslaught of the Beavers, as the home team was able to tie the score at five before Shane Holman netted the game-winner with 1:15 remaining in the game.

Nate Higgins (Calgary, Alb./Green Bay Gamblers) scored the first goal of the game at the 3:20 mark, putting in a one-timer off a pass from Jared Katz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Baystate Breakers). Jason Bloomingburg (Canton, Mich./Texas Tornado) also earned an assist on the play to put the Warriors ahead, 1-0.

Bemidji State scored two goals 44 seconds apart, a power-play tally by Cody Bostock and an even-strength marker by Holman, to take a 2-1 lead, but Mark Cannon (River Rouge, Mich./Compuware Ambassadors) tied the game at two with just 55 seconds left in the opening period.

Cannon fired a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle which BSU goaltender Matt Climie thought he had saved, but the puck instead glanced off his glove and tricked past the line, giving Cannon his first goal since Feb. 3, 2006.

Wayne State reclaimed the lead on a power play at 1:15 in the second period when Katz followed in on a rebound between the faceoff circles from a shot by Higgins. Ten seconds later, Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) fired a shot from just inside the blue line to beat Climie, who was subsequently pulled from the game in favor of Orlando Alamano.

Travis Winter tipped in a shot by John Vadnais on a power play to narrow BSU's deficit to 4-3 at 5:12, but Mark Nebus (South Lyon, Mich./Texas Tornado) put the Warriors ahead by a pair again, deflecting a shot from the point by Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) at 11:19.

Winter scored his second power-play marker of the game with just under three minutes remaining in the middle stanza, and Bemidji State rode the wave of momentum from that goal into the decisive third period.

Joey Moggach tied the game at five midway through the period, and Holman followed with the game winner at 18:45. An empty-net goal by Blaine Jarvis capped off Bemidji State's fourth win this season over Wayne State.

WSU goaltender Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) matched his total from the previous game with 25 saves. Alamano made 14 saves in relief, allowing just one goal.

Wayne State will host Ferris State next weekend as part of a doubleheader with the WSU women's squad at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum. For ticket info, please call 1-866-WSU-TIKS.
