Bemidji, Minn. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (4-13-3 overall, 1-5-2 CHA) suffered a 6-2 setback at Bemidji State's (11-8-3 overall, 6-3-1 CHA) Glas Fieldhouse Saturday night.
The host Beavers outshot WSU 15-6 in the opening period and led 2-0 on a power-play goal by Matt Pope 2:15 into the contest and an even-strength marker by Luke Erickson with 2:14 left in the period.
The Warriors had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal during the middle frame but BSU scored the only goal as Ryan Miller tallied at the 2:48 mark.
Five goals were scored in a wild third period as the teams combined for 23 shots on goal. Bemidji outscored WSU 3-2 in the frame.
BSU's Rob Sirianni scored a power-play goal at the 1:07 mark for a 4-0 lead for the home team.
Wayne State's John May (Livonia, Mich./Springfield Junior Blues) scored the Warriors' first short-handed goal of the season at the 6:06 mark. May's second of the season, and first since Nov. 5 at Niagara, was assisted by sophomore forward Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) and senior defenseman Greg Poupard (Jackson, Mich./Waterloo Black Hawks). It was WSU's first short-handed goal since Adam Krug scored Feb. 26, 2005, vs. Air Force.
Bemidji regained its four goal lead at the 9:52 mark on an even-strength goal by Jean-Guy Gervais. BSU's Matt Allen scored a power-play marker with 9:11 remaining in the contest.
WSU freshman Jon Grabarek (Sterling Hts., Mich./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) completed the scoring with his fourth goal of the season at the 13:01 mark. Grabarek's fourth goal in his last 11 games was assisted by classmate Adam Smith (W. Bloomfield, Mich./Springfield Spirit) and junior Mark Cannon (River Rouge, Mich./Compuware).
Warrior senior goalie Matt Kelly (Hull, Mass./Topeka Scarecrows) allowed all six BSU goals on 26 shots before being lifted for junior Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) for the final 9:11. Hooper stopped all six shots he faced.
Bemidji goalie Layne Sedevie made 23 saves on 25 Wayne State shots.
Both teams had seven power play chances, with BSU outscoring Wayne State three-to-zero with the man advantage.
Wayne State returns to the Motor City for its first home conference games in two months as the Robert Morris Colonials visit Detroit for 7:05 p.m. face-offs both Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21. The WSU women's hockey squad will play at the Fairgrounds at 4 p.m. both Friday and Saturday against the Rensselaer Engineers.
