TAYLOR, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (5-16-2, 1-6-0 CHA) dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to league rival Niagara (12-8-1, 6-4-1 CHA) at the Taylor SportsPlex on Friday night.

Armando Scarlato's first goal of the season snapped a 2-2 tie with 2:49 remaining, giving the Purple Eagles their third win in as many meetings this season with the Warriors.

Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Saugeen Greys) and Brock Meadows (Mission, B.C./Salmon Arm Silverbacks) lit the lamp for Wayne State, and Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) extended his point streak to four games with an assist.

The visitors took a 1-0 lead at the 16:50 mark when Nate Bostic capped off a scramble in front of the net with his second goal of the season from Paul Zanette and David Ross.

Michel tied the game at one apiece midway through the second period with his fifth tally of the year, firing a wrist shot from the right side over the blocker of Niagara netminder Juliano Pagliero.

Meadows' second goal of the season, from Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) and Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians), came five minutes later, as the freshman blasted a slap shot which caromed into the air off Pagliero and trickled over the line to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

The advantage was short-lived, however, as Bryan Haczyk tied it at two with assists from Chris Moran and Travis Anderson. Haczyk penetrated the WSU defensive corps and beat Warrior goaltender Mike Devoney (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Bridgewater Bandits) for his second goal of the season.

With just under three minutes to play, Scarlato found open ice in the WSU zone and made a nice move on Devoney before putting away a short wrist shot for the game-winner. Vince Rocco and Travis Anderson earned helpers on the play.

Shots on goal favored Wayne State, 23-17, but Pagliero made 21 saves for the win. Devoney finished with 14 saves, and neither netminder allowed a power-play goal in a combined eight chances.

Wayne State and Niagara will meet again Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills for a 3:30 p.m. faceoff, followed by Michigan and Notre Dame at 7:00 p.m. Warrior fans can listen to the game free of charge on the Internet via Teamline.
