DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (7-17-0, 3-7-0 CHA) narrowly defeated Robert Morris (8-13-1, 5-7-0 CHA), 2-1, on Saturday night at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Senior defenseman Dan Iliakis (Scarborough, Ont./Georgetown Raiders) netted the game-winner in a contest which saw all of the scoring confined to the final period.
After nearly 42 minutes of scoreless hockey, senior Jason Baclig (Leamington, Ont./Leamington Flyers) broke the deadlock with two seconds remaining in a power-play to put the Warriors ahead, 1-0. Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) and Mark Nebus (South Lyon, Mich./Texas Tornado) worked the puck along the end boards to Baclig, who brought it around from behind the net and tucked it in under the left pad of RMU goaltender Joe Tuset.
The lead would last just 41 seconds, however, as Aaron Clarke collected a rebound off a long-distance shot from Chris Kaufman and scored his second goal of the series at 2:37 to tie the game at one.
At the 7:23 mark, Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) found Iliakis open across the ice, and the senior blueliner fired a shot into the top corner of the net for his third goal of the season. Baclig, who started the play moving the puck out of WSU's zone into neutral ice, also earned an assist.
Wayne State goaltender Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) made 25 saves, including 13 in the final period, for his sixth victory of the season. Tuset finished with 27 saves for Robert Morris.
With 10 games remaining, Wayne State has already surpassed its win total from a season ago.
Wayne State will continue conference play as the Warriors travel to Niagara to take on the Purple Eagles next weekend, Jan. 26-27. Both games will be broadcast on WDTK 1400 AM and online at www.wdtkam.com.
