DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (5-13-4, 2-5-3 CHA) scored three times in the third period to snap a 3-3 deadlock and record a 6-3 triumph over visiting Robert Morris University (5-15-2, 2-7-1 CHA) Saturday evening at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.

The contest started promising for the Warriors as junior forward Nate Higgins (Calgary, Alb./Green Bay Gamblers) scored the fourth fastest goal to start a game in school history. Higgins took a cross-ice feed from junior left wing Jason Bloomingburg (Canton, Mich./Texas Tornado) and went high to the blocker side to beat an over-committed Christian Boucher. Sophomore forward Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) also assisted on Higgins' 10th of the season.

Just before the mid-point of the opening stanza, Bachynski intercepted a d-to-d pass by Colonial blueliner Jake Sparks and scored his third goal of the season on a breakaway at the 9:43 mark.

RMU pulled within a goal with 5:24 remaining in the first period as Jason Towsley gathered a loose puck from between the skates of WSU defenseman Matt Boldt and scored his first collegiate goal.

The Warriors regained the two-goal advantage with only seven seconds left in the opening frame. Senior John May (Livonia, Mich./Springfield Junior Blues) won an offensive zone face-off back to senior defenseman Greg Poupard (Jackson, Mich./Waterloo Black Hawks), who passed the puck into the corner to junior forward Mark Nebus (South Lyon, Mich./Texas Tornado). Nebus' pass found junior forward Jason Baclig (Leamington, Ont./Leamington Flyers) in front of Boucher. Baclig spun around and his backhand shot dribbled through Boucher for his fourth of the season.

The Colonials controlled much of the second period as WSU was assessed a five-minute major for hitting from behind. RMU had a nine-to-two advantage in shots on goal and scored twice to tie the game at three.

Doug Conley's first of the season came 1:16 into the middle stanza, while Chris Margott's power-play goal at 9:32 tied the game.

The Warriors reversed the trend in the third period outshooting the guests 12-2.

Bachynski banged in his fourth of the campaign just 1:55 into the third period for the game-winner, his first since Oct. 31, 2004. Sophomore forward Adam Krug (Livonia, Mich./Sioux City Musketeers) and Bloomingburg earned assists. Bachynski recorded a career-best three points in the contest.

Less than three minutes later WSU went ahead 5-3 as Bloomingburg netted a power-play goal at the 4:42 mark. His seventh of the season was assisted by Adam Krug and sophomore forward Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians). Bloomingburg equaled a career-high with three points in the match, while Krug tied a personal best with two assists in the game.

Nebus completed the scoring with a four-on-four lamp-lighter with 5:42 left in the game. His fourth of the year was assisted by Baclig and junior defenseman Taylor Donohoe (Richmond, B.C./Powell River Kings). It was Nebus' first goal since Dec. 10 against Merrimack, while Donohoe earned his first helper since March 6, 2005. After ending a 14-game pointless streak with a goal on Friday, Donohoe has tied his career-best with a two-game point streak.

WSU junior goalie Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) made 16 saves to earn his second win of the season. In Hooper's first seven starts, the Warriors scored 10 goals. Boucher turned aside 23 Wayne State shots.

Both teams went one-for-six on the power play.

Wayne State remains at home as the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers visit the State Fairgrounds for a two-game series on Jan. 27-28. Face-off both nights is slated for 7:05 p.m.
