Marquette, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (5-15-5) suffered a 3-1 non-league setback at Northern Michigan University (15-12-2) Friday evening.

A shots on goal advantage did not relate to a scoreboard advantage in the first two periods at the Berry Events Center.

The visiting Warriors had a 12-11 advantage in shots on goal during the opening 20 minutes but it was NMU's Dirk Southern with the lone goal as he scored a short-handed marker just 4:28 into the contest.

WSU tied the game at one just 1:53 into the middle stanza as junior forward Mark Cannon (River Rouge, Mich./Compuware) netted his third of the season off an assist from freshman blueliner Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado).

Cannon has a goal in each of the last two games after scoring just once in his first 18 games of the campaign. Krug ended an eight-game scoreless streak.

Just before the mid-point of the match, Southern scored a power-play goal (9:07) to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.

NMU had a 12-5 shots on goal advantage in the second period as the hosts had the only two power-play opportunities in the frame.

Southern completed the hat trick with 7:31 remaining in the game by scoring a four-on-four goal.

Wayne State was able to get senior goaltender Matt Kelly (Hull, Mass./Topeka Scarecrows) off the ice for an extra skater for the final 50 seconds but were unable to pull within a goal.

Kelly finished the contest with 31 saves including double-digit totals in each period. NMU netminder Derek Janzen turned aside 24 Warrior shots.

Wayne State went zero-for-three on the power play, with Northern Michigan scoring once in four man-advantage chances.

WSU concludes the non-conference portion of its regular-season schedule on Saturday with a 7:35 p.m. face-off versus the Wildcats.
