Marquette, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (5-16-5 overall) allowed two second period goals in dropping a 2-1 decision at Northern Michigan University (16-12-2) Saturday evening in WSU's final regular-season non-conference game of the season.
A scoreless first period saw the host Wildcats record a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.
NMU went ahead 1-0 just 56 seconds into the middle stanza as Mike Santorelli netted his 11th of the season off assists from Pat Bateman and Zach Tarkir.
Just before the mid-point of the game, Northern Michigan increased its lead to 2-0 on a five-on-three power-play goal by Nathan Oystrick at the 9:57 mark. Jamie Milam and Bateman earned assists on the eventual game-winner.
The Wildcats held a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal during the second period. Northern Michigan had four power play opportunities in the middle frame to just one man-advantage chance for WSU.
Wayne State junior left wing Jason Bloomingburg (Canton, Mich./Texas Tornado) pulled the Warriors within a goal (2-1) at the 8:47 mark of the third period. Bloomingburg's eighth of the campaign was assisted by senior defenseman Steve Kovalchik (Riverview, Mich./Omaha Lancers) and sophomore forward Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians).
Bloomingburg moved into 10th place on WSU's all-time goal list with his 28th in only 60 games in the Green and Gold. Kovalchik is WSU's active leading scorer with 62 points, while Paskaris has a point in four of the last six games.
WSU was able to get junior goalie Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) off the ice for an extra skater for the final 51 seconds but was unable to score the equalizer.
Hooper made 30 saves in the contest, while NMU goalie Bill Zaniboni stopped 20 Warrior shots.
Wayne State continues on the road next week with a two-game set at College Hockey America rival Robert Morris. Face-off both nights in suburban Pittsburgh is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
