DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (8-20-0, 4-10-0 CHA) evened its season series with Alabama-Huntsville (8-18-2, 5-10-1 CHA) at two games apiece with a 4-1 victory over the Chargers at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum on Saturday night.

Jason Baclig (Leamington, Ont./Leamington Flyers) netted the game-winner in the second period, and Jared Katz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Baystate Breakers) and Mark Nebus (South Lyon, Mich./Texas Tornado) each had a goal and an assist.

Following a scoreless first period, Dan Iliakis (Scarborough, Ont./Georgetown Raiders) gave the home team a one-goal lead at 3:51 of the middle stanza, putting home a wrist shot on a tough angle from down low in the right faceoff circle. Katz and Nate Higgins (Calgary, Alb./Green Bay Gamblers) assisted on the play.

Mark Cannon (River Rouge, Mich./Compuware Ambassadors) started the setup for Baclig's marker, digging the puck off the boards from a UAH defenseman to Nebus, who found Baclig skating hard into the UAH zone. The senior forward fired a shot into the top corner past Charger netminder Blake MacNicol at 8:38.

Alabama-Huntsville narrowed the gap with a goal by Brett McConnachie at 14:46, as he and Grant Selinger capitalized on a WSU turnover and successfully completed a two-on-one against WSU goaltender Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders).

Katz gave the Warriors another two-goal cushion, however, with 23 seconds remaining in the period. During a four-on-three power-play, Jon Grabarek worked the puck back to Matt Krug, who fired a slap shot from the blue line which Katz tipped into the net.

Nebus put an additional insurance tally on the board midway through the final period, capitalizing on a second rebound in front of MacNicol. Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) and Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks), both of whom took shots on the play to create the rebounds, were credited with helpers.

The Warriors outshot the Chargers, 32-18, and Hooper finished with 17 saves.

Wayne State will host its second of three straight CHA series at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum against Niagara next weekend, Feb. 16-17.
