Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (5-17-6 overall, 2-7-5 CHA) suffered a 5-4 setback at Robert Morris University (9-15-3 overall, 5-7-2 CHA) Saturday night.
The Warriors started quickly out of the gates scoring twice in the first 86 seconds to chase Colonial starting netminder Christian Boucher.
WSU junior left wing Jason Bloomingburg (Canton, Mich./Texas Tornado) scored the second fastest goal to start a game in school history lighting the lamp just 10 seconds into the contest. Bloomingburg's 10th of the campaign was assisted by senior defenseman Steve Kovalchik (Riverview, Mich./Omaha Lancers).
At the 1:26 mark of the opening period, the Warriors increased their lead to 2-0 as senior center John May (Livonia, Mich./Springfield Junior Blues) netted his third goal of the season off assists from juniors Matt Boldt (Burnsville, Minn./Billings Bulls) and Dan Iliakis (Scarborough, Ont./Georgetown Raiders).
Robert Morris made it a 2-1 contest on a goal by Chris Margott at the 10:56 mark of the first period and tied the game just 64 seconds later on a goal by Brett Hopfe.
Hopfe's second goal of the game, this one on a power play, at the 10:13 mark of the second period gave the Colonials a 3-2 lead.
Wayne State trailed for just 97 seconds as freshman wing Jon Grabarek (Sterling Hts., Mich./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) tallied his sixth goal of the season off assists from Bloomingburg and Iliakis.
The tie lasted just over three minutes as RMU's Logan Bittle gave the hosts a 4-3 advantage with 5:01 remaining in the middle stanza.
WSU would pull even at four apiece before the second intermission as freshman defenseman Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) lit the lamp for the second time this season. Krug's even-strength goal was assisted by sophomore forward Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) and junior forward Jason Baclig (Leamington, Ont./Leamington Flyers).
The first 11 minutes of the third period were scoreless until the teams were skating four-on-four and RMU's Aaron Clarke scored three seconds after a face-off.
The Warriors were able to get netminder Will Hooper to the bench for an extra skater for the final 75 seconds but were unable to score the equalizer.
Hooper made 28 saves in the game including double-digit totals in both of the first two periods. Boucher did not make any saves before being lifted for back-up Joe Tuset, who turned aside 27 of 29 WSU shots to earn his second win of the season.
The Warriors were zero-for-three on the power play, while RMU scored once in four man-advantage opportunities.
Wayne State returns home to the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum for back-to-back men's and women's hockey doubleheaders on Friday (Feb. 17) and Saturday (Feb. 18). Both Warrior hockey squads skate against CHA rival Niagara University with the women's game starting at 4 pm each day followed by the men's game.
