HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (9-21-2, 5-11-0 CHA) split its series at Alabama-Huntsville (5-18-3, 2-11-3 CHA) following a 5-2 loss Sunday afternoon at the Von Braun Center.
Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) and Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians) had a goal and an assist each to lead the Warriors offensively. Their tallies erased a two-goal deficit, but three unanswered markers by the Chargers put the game out of reach.
UAH's Tom Train and Josh Murray scored 66 seconds apart in the first period to put the home team ahead, 2-0.
Bachynski, who has six points in his last three games, scored his third goal of the series on a power-play at 13:38. Paskaris and Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) extended their individual point streaks to four games with assists on the play.
Paskaris scored his 11th goal of the season with helpers from Bachynski and Derek Punches (Manchester, Mich./Texas Tornado) at 3:39 in the second period, but Kevin Morrison snapped the tie with 57 seconds left in the period on a Chargers power-play.
Chris Fairbanks gave the Chargers a two-goal cushion at 15:09 in the third, and Matt Sweazey added an empty-netter with 12 seconds left to assure the victory.
Wayne State edged Alabama-Huntsville, 32-29, in shots on goal. Blake MacNicol stopped 30 of WSU's 32 shots for the win, while Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) totaled 24 saves for WSU.
The Warriors are off next weekend before heading to Bemidji State for their final road series of the season Feb. 29-Mar. 1.
