DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team scored twice in the first period on its way to a 3-1 victory over Bemidji State at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum on Friday night.

Mark Nebus (South Lyon, Mich./Texas Tornado) netted the game-winner, while Mike Forgie (Scarborough, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) recorded a goal and an assist for his second multi-point game of the season. Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians) added a power-play insurance tally in the third, his first goal since Feb. 10, 2006 at Robert Morris, a span of 38 games.

Wayne State held Bemidji State, a team WSU had not defeated since Nov. 23, 2004 (0-9-1 in that span) to a lone power-play marker in eight opportunities, while the Warriors were successful on two of their four power-play chances.

Forgie's goal put Wayne State ahead, 1-0, at 7:58 of the opening period. Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Saugeen Greys) intercepted an attempted Bemidji State clearance in the neutral zone and skated in for a shot. Forgie collected the rebound for his six goal of the season.

The game-winning marker came with a man advantage at 17:26, as Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) sent the puck back off the left boards to Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks), who fired a shot from the blue line off the pads of BSU goaltender Matt Climie. Nebus finished off the rebound with a short-range backhand from Climie's right, his sixth goal of the season, to put the Warriors ahead by a pair.

Bemidji State forward Rob Sirianni narrowed the score to 2-1 just 2:35 into the middle stanza, putting in a one-timer off a centering pass from Joey Moggach. Cody Bostock also assisted on the play.

The Beavers nearly tied it minutes later on a breakaway by Tyler Lehrke, but WSU goaltender Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) came up with a key save, one of 25 stops he recorded on the night.

With just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation, Jason Bloomingburg (Canton, Mich./Texas Tornado) and Forgie worked the puck around the boards behind Climie's net to Paskaris, who fired a wrist shot from the left circle to break his scoring drought.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow (Feb. 24) on Senior Night at the Coliseum. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
