Huntsville, Ala. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (6-19-6 overall, 3-9-5 CHA) was dealt a 2-1 setback Friday night at first place Alabama Huntsville (17-10-2 overall, 11-5-1 CHA).
The Warriors tied the score early in the third period only to have the host Chargers score with 1:11 left, just three seconds after WSU had killed off a penalty.
After a scoreless first period, the host Chargers took a 1-0 lead at the 8:01 mark of the second period as UAH's leading goal-scorer Bruce Mulherin netted his 12th of the campaign. The Huntsville power play goal was assisted by Jeremy Schreiber and Chris Martini.
Warrior sophomore center Adam Krug (Livonia, Mich./Sioux City Musketeers) ended WSU's goal less drought of 65:52 with an even-strength goal four minutes into the third period. With the lamp-lighter, Krug set a personal best with a three-game goal-scoring streak. He has 10 points (4-6) in the last five games.
Sophomore forward Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Greys) earned an assist in his first game since being injured on Dec. 31 vs. Western Michigan at the Badger Showdown. Wayne State went 2-8-4 without Michel in the lineup.
Mulherin's 13th of the season came at the 18:49 mark and was assisted by Martini and Jeff Winchester.
Warrior junior netminder Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) had a strong game between the pipes. Hooper stopped all 12 Huntsville shots in the opening frame and finished the contest with 25 saves. UAH goalie Scott Munroe turned aside 31 Wayne State shots as the guests held a 33-27 advantage in shots on goal.
WSU went zero-for-seven on the power play, with UAH scoring once in seven man-advantage opportunities.
The Warriors will play their final regular-season road game on Saturday in Huntsville at the Von Braun Civic Center. Opening face-off is slated for 5:05 p.m.
