Fraser, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team won its third consecutive College Hockey America contest with a 3-0 whitewash of visiting Findlay Friday night at the Great Lakes Sports City Arena in Fraser on Senior Night.
Senior goaltender David Guerrera (St. Leonard, Que./Estevan Bruins) turned aside all 35 Oiler shots to record his second shutout of the season (both against Findlay; other was a 3-0 win on Jan. 25 at Findlay) and his seventh career blanking. UF, after being outshot 10-8 in the opening period, outshot the Warriors 27-9 over the final 40 minutes with Guerrera stopping everything. Ten of Findlay's 35 shots came during its six power-play chances.
WSU sophomore center Billy Collins (Enderby, B.C./Prince George Spruce Kings) scored the first two goals of the game, both on deflections for his first career multiple-goal game. The two lamp-lighters also extended his goal-scoring streak to three games.
Just 71 seconds into the contest Collins deflected in Marc St. Jean's (Orleans, Ont./Hawkesbury Hawks) blueline shot past Findlay goalie Jamie VandeSpyker. The assist gave St. Jean seven points (two goals, five assists) in the last eight games.
With 2:43 remaining in the opening period, Collins redirected in Tyler Kindle's (Portage, Mich./Bozeman Icedogs) shot from the left point. The "helper" gave Kindle three assists in the last two contests.
Early in the second period, Nick Stodgell's (Warroad, Minn./Des Moines Buccaneers) shot from the left point was deflected out front to Nathan Rosychuk (Athabasca, Alb./Grande Prairie Storm), who slid the puck under VandeSpyker for his 10th of the campaign. It marked Stodgell's first assist since the November 9th win at Ferris State. Rosychuk now has two goals in his last three games.
Findlay pulled VandeSpyker twice in the final 1:57 during a power play for a total of 1:45 but could not get the puck past Guerrera.
Following the game, Wayne State honored its 12-member senior class, who will be playing their final regular-season game on Saturday, March 8 at Findlay. With Niagara's victory over Alabama-Huntsville on March 7, the Warriors will finish either third or fourth in the final CHA regular-season standings. WSU will skate against Findlay or Air Force in a CHA quarterfinal contest on Friday, March 14 at Tri-City Arena in Kearney, Neb.
Wayne State went zero-for-four with the man-advantage in 6:46, while stopping all six Findlay power plays which lasted a total of 10:43.
WSU improves to 17-16-2 overall and 10-7-2 in the CHA for 22 points, while the Oilers fall to 10-19-4 overall with a league ledger of 3-12-4 for 10 points.
