DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team held its annual intrasquad exhibition game Sunday night at the Fairgrounds Coliseum in which the White team came from behind to defeat the Green squad, 6-5.
Senior captain Mike Forgie (Scarborough, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) scored four goals for the White team, including the game-winner with less than five minutes to go in the contest.
Team Green got most of its production from junior Jon Grabarek (Sterling Hts., Mich./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), who scored a goal and added three helpers.
Freshman Evan Mackintosh (San Jose, Calif./Boston Jr. Bruins) put Team White on the board first in the opening period, but the Green squad scored four times before the end of the period to take a 4-1 lead into the locker room. Jeremy Tejchma (Muskegon, Mich./Bridgewater Bandits), Jared Katz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Baystate Breakers), Tyler Ruel (Port Alberni, Alb./Alberni Valley Bulldogs), and Jordan Inglis (108 Mile Ranch, B.C./Prince George Spruce Kings) all lit the lamp for Team Green.
Forgie scored a pair in the second period, including one on the power play, to make it a 4-3 game through the first 40 minutes.
Grabarek's tally early in the third gave Green a two-goal cushion, but two more goals from Forgie and one from Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians) in between gave the White team the victory.
Shots on goal were even at 27 apiece, and both sides were 2-for-4 on the power play.
Two freshmen shared time between the pipes for Team Green, as Mike Devoney (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Bridgewater Bandits) made 14 saves in the first two periods and Kyle Funkenhauser (Windsor, Ont./Surrey Eagles) saved seven shots in the third. Sophomore Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) made 22 saves for Team White.
Wayne State will host Eastern Michigan at the Coliseum in an exhibition Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
