Dayton, Ohio - The Wayne State University men's hockey team began its 2005-06 regular season with a match-up against No. 17-Michigan State in the opening game of the Lefty McFadden Invitational being held at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.

The Warriors started strong scoring just nine seconds into the contest as junior left wing Jason Baclig (Leamington, Ont./Leamington Flyers) scored off assists from linemates Mike Forgie (Scarborough, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) and Mark Nebus (South Lyon, Mich./Texas Tornado).

The Spartans tied the contest just past the mid-point of the opening period on a power-play goal by Justin Abdelkader as he scored off a rebound of a Corey Potter shot.

MSU held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal during the opening 20 minutes and proceeded to outshoot the Warriors 13-1 in the middle frame.

The Spartans recorded two man-advantage markers in the final eight minutes of the second stanza, the first coming during a five-minute MSU power play. The second goal came just two seconds into a Michigan State power play and with only one second remaining in the period.

Michigan State tacked on two even-strength goals in the final period for the 5-1 victory.

WSU senior goalie Matt Kelly (Hull, Mass./Topeka Scarecrows) turned aside 29 Spartan shots, while MSU netminder Dominic Vicari was credited with 15 saves.

Michigan State went three-for-10 on the power play, while WSU was zero-for-five.

Wayne State concludes the invitational with a 5:35 p.m. face-off on Sunday against tournament host Miami. WSU's next home game at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum will be an exhibition contest against the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday, October 13 with a 7:05 p.m. opening face-off.
