MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (0-1-0) opened the 2006-07 regular season with a 7-1 loss at eighth-ranked Minnesota (1-1-0) on Friday night.
Minnesota's Ben Gordon and Blake Wheeler eadh had three points in the game. Gordon recorded the game-winning goal and a pair of assists, while Wheeler scored twice and had one helper.
Alex Goligoski got the Golden Gophers on the board at 8:15 in the first period, and Gordon tacked on another at 18:56 to put Minnesota ahead, 2-0, through one period of play.
Wheeler's first goal of the evening at 8:14 in the middle period made it 3-0, and Ryan Flynn lit the lamp at 10:40 to give Minnesota a four-goal advantage.
The Warriors got their lone goal on a power play at 11:38, when Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Saugeen Greys) put one past Gopher netminder Jeff Frazee. Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) got an assist on the play for his first collegiate point, and Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians) earned the other helper.
Minnesota scored twice more in the second period and added its seventh and final goal at 14:31 in the third period to close out the game.
The Gophers outshot the Warriors, 41-10, but Wayne State held the home team scoreless on seven power-play opportunities. WSU also had seven chances and scored once.
Frazee saved nine shots for his first win of the season, and WSU goaltender Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) stopped 34 Minnesota shots.
The two squads will face off at Mariucci Arena again tomorrow night (Oct. 14) at 8:07 ET.
