MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (0-2-0) dropped a 5-1 decision at eighth-ranked Minnesota (2-1-0) on Saturday night at Mariucci Arena.
All of the scoring came in the second period, and four of the six goals were on power plays.
Minnesota's Jay Barriball broke the scoreless tie 30 seconds into the middle period and Blake Wheeler, scoring his third goal of the series, netted the eventual game-winner at 4:17.
Wayne State got on the board during a power-play at 10:18, as redshirt senior and co-captain Jason Bloomingburg (Canton, Mich./Texas Tornado) lit the lamp for the first time this season. Freshman Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) and junior Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians), who each assisted on WSU's lone goal Friday night, did so again in this contest.
Three power-play markers by the Gophers - two by Kyle Okposo and another by Barriball - completed the scoring.
Freshman goaltender Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers), making his collegiate debut, stopped 45 of Minnesota's 50 shots. Jeff Frazee got his second win of the season for the Gophers, making 22 saves.
Wayne State opens College Hockey America play next weekend, Oct. 20-21, when the Warriors travel to Alabama-Huntsville for a two-game series.
