BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (0-3-0) lost a heated battle Friday night to Ferris State (1-2-0), 6-2, at Ewigleben Arena in Big Rapids.

The two teams amassed a combined 85 penalty minutes, 61 of which came in the second period and included a game misconduct and two disqualifications as a result of fighting penalties.

Meanwhile, Ferris State outshot Wayne State, 43-15, while each squad netted a power-play goal (FSU went 1-for-5, WSU was 1-for-7).

Matt Case gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 6:47 of the opening period with a power-play tally, and Justin Menke followed it up at 8:04 with an even-strength goal.

Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Saugeen Greys) cut the Warriors' deficit in half with his first goal of the season at 9:27, with assists from Bryan Olds (Duluth, Minn./Wichita Falls Rustlers) who achieved his first career point, and Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians).

Four straight FSU goals, including the game-winner from Aaron Lewicki, gave the home team a 6-1 lead in the midst of the tumultuous and penalty-laden second and third periods.

Freshman Brock Meadows (Mission, B.C./Salmon Arm Silverbacks) scored his first collegiate goal on a 5-on-3 advantage with five minutes to go in the game, assisted by Ryan Bernardi (Etobicoke, Ont./Milton Icehawks) and Derek Punches (Manchester, Mich./Texas Tornado).

Starting goaltender Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) totaled 22 saves in the first two periods, while freshman Kyle Funkenhauser (Windsor, Ont./Surrey Eagles) came on in relief and made 15 saves in the final stanza. FSU's Pat Nagle had 13 saves, including nine in the third period.

The Warriors and Bulldogs will hit the ice again Saturday night for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff.
