DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (1-4-0) surrendered two goals in the third period as the Sacred Heart Pioneers (2-2-1) defeated the Warriors, 2-1, at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum on Friday night.
Wayne State got on the board first, as freshman Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) netted his first collegiate goal at the 18:45 mark. Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) sent a pass across the center line to Jared Katz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Baystate Breakers), who broke into the Sacred Heart zone before being tied up by two defensemen and taken down. From his backside, however, he was able to get a backhand pass out towards the blue line to Caister, who put a hard wrist shot into the top right corner past Pioneer goaltender Stefan Drew.
The score remained 1-0 through the first two periods, with Wayne State holding a 16-15 edge in shots on goal entering the final 20 minutes of play.
The pace quickened in the third period, and Sacred Heart was able to capitalize on one of its four power plays on the night at 11:55 to tie the score. Dave Grimson intercepted an attempted clearing pass by Wayne State and found Alexandre Parent across the blue line, who fired a slap shot past WSU netminder Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) for his first goal of the season.
Sacred Heart got the game-winner at 15:32 off the stick of Dave Jarman, who got his first goal of the season as well. Jarman collected a rebound in front of the net off a shot by Peter Ferraro, who got an assist on the play along with Scott Marchesi.
Wayne State played with an empty net and extra skater for the final 87 seconds, but failed to score.
The Warriors will host the St. Lawrence Saints tomorrow night (Oct. 28) at 7:05 p.m.
