DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (1-5-0) dropped a 4-0 decision to St. Lawrence (2-3-0) on Saturday night at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
The Saints scored three times in the final period to hand the Warriors their second loss in as many home games.
Mike McKenzie netted his second of the season at 14:49 in the opening period, which would be the only goal scored through the first two periods. Jared Ross began the play with a shot from the blue line just as an SLU power play was ending. His shot was tipped in front by Kyle Rank to the stick of McKenzie, who placed his shot inside the near post.
Wayne State held an 11-9 advantage in shots on goal through the first 20 minutes, but St. Lawrence came out firing in the second period, outshooting WSU, 18-5.
SLU's Charlie Giffin extended the Saints' lead to 2-0 at 6:02 in the third with his second goal of the season, collecting a rebound off a shot from Drew Bagnall.
The Saints got a power-play goal from Ross at 9:24, who fired a shot from the blue line past Warrior goaltender Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers). Max Taylor and Brock McBride assisted on the play.
With 10 seconds remaining, Tom Bardis put the exclamation point on the night for St. Lawrence with his first goal of the year, assisted by Travis Vermeulen.
Shots were 39-26 in favor of the Saints, who went 1-for-6 on the power play. Wayne State was held scoreless in six power-play chances.
The Warriors embark on a four-week road trip, beginning next Saturday night (Nov. 4) at Western Michigan. Wayne State's next home series will be Dec. 1-2 against CHA rival Bemidji State.
