Potsdam, N.Y. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (0-4-0 overall) suffered a 7-1 loss Saturday night at Clarkson University's (4-2) Cheel Arena.
The score was tied at one after 20 minutes despite the host Golden Knights holding a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
CU's Steve Zalewski scored a power-play goal with 5:58 remaining in the opening period for the game's first goal.
Wayne State junior left wing Jason Bloomingburg (Canton, Mich./Texas Tornado) responded with a 4-3 power-play goal with only 28 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. Bloomingburg, who set a WSU single-season record with 20 goals a year ago, notched his first of the campaign off assists from junior right wing Nate Higgins (Calgary, Alb./Green Bay Gamblers) and senior defenseman Steve Kovalchik (Riverview, Mich./Omaha Lancers).
The Warriors were outshot 16-13 in the middle stanza and were outscored 3-0. Clarkson's Nick Dodge scored the tiebreaking goal on a power play 2:05 into the period. Shawn Weller (5:43) and Mike Sullivan (7:52) added even-strength markers in the middle 20 minutes.
The host Golden Knights scored three more times, in a span of 6:45, in the third period. Chris Brekelmans (10:25), Chris D'Alvise (16:38) and Brodie Rutherglen (17:10) all scored even-strength goals.
WSU senior netminder Matt Kelly (Hull, Mass./Topeka Scarecrows) made 35 saves including 13 in each of the final two periods. Clarkson goalie Kyle McNulty turned aside 25 Warrior shots.
Wayne State went one-for-nine on the power play, with Clarkson scoring twice in eight man-advantage opportunities.
Wayne State continues its season-opening six-game road trip commencing College Hockey America play with a two-game series at Niagara next Friday and Saturday.
