Niagara University, N.Y. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (0-5-1 overall, 0-1-1 CHA) played its second consecutive overtime game at Niagara University (4-3-1, 1-0-1 CHA), this time skating to a 3-3 draw.
For the second straight day, WSU opened the scoring as junior defenseman Taylor Donohoe wristed a shot from the top of the left face-off circle past Pagliero at the 11:38 mark. Donohoe's first of the season was assisted by Adam Krug and Jason Baclig.
The lead was short-lived as Niagara tied the game at the 13:51 mark of the opening stanza on a fluke bounce. A WSU skater attempted to clear the puck behind his own net when it took an awkward bounce of the boards and traveled in front of a surprised Matt Kelly. Skating in towards the goal crease, NU's Ted Cook was able to put the puck into the lower-right corner for the tying goal.
Niagara took its first lead of the game early in the middle period as Sean Bentivoglio scored at the 1:20 mark.
WSU fought back to take a 3-2 lead scoring two power-play goals in 32 seconds during a major penalty to Niagara's Andrew Lackner. Nate Higgins and John May recorded the lamp-lighters.
Later in the period, NU's Marc Norrington netted a man-advantage marker to even the score at three.
Neither team was able to score in the third period or during the five-minute sudden-death overtime period.
Kelly was credited with 39 saves in the WSU cage. Niagara freshman goalie Juliano Pagliero, in his first collegiate start, made 39 saves including four in the extra session.
The Warriors were two-for-six on the power play and stopped seven of Niagara's eight man-advantage opportunities.
Wayne State returns to the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum next weekend for its regular-season home opening games against the Bemidji State Beavers. Face-off is 7:05 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
