DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (0-6-1) was unable to notch its first win of the season, falling 3-2 to Lake Superior State (2-4-1) on Friday night in the Warriors' home opener at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Bryan Olds (Duluth, Minn./Wichita Falls Rustlers) scored his first career goal, and Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Saugeen Greys) added an extra-skater tally with 10 seconds remaining in a rally effort that fell just short for the Warriors.
During a 4-on-3 power play, Lake Superior State struck first just 2:06 into the contest on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line by Steven Kaunisto. Dan Eves and Nik Sellers assisted on the play.
Wayne State responded at the 12:32 mark on Olds' unassisted goal. The junior forward stole the puck from a LSSU forward and skated the length of the ice before firing a shot off the far post and into the net.
The teams remained tied at 1-1 for the next 32 minutes until LSSU regained its one-goal lead thanks to Troy Schwab, whose wrist shot from the right side glanced off the pads of goaltender Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) and trickled past the line.
Nathan Perkovich earned the game-winner on his sixth goal of the season from Rick Schofield and Steve Oleksy at the 10:03 mark. With Bothwell pulled for the final 1:12 the Warriors tried to stage a comeback but could only muster Michel's tally from Derek Punches (Manchester, Mich./Texas Tornado) and Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks).
Shots were nearly even, with WSU taking a 22-20 edge. Pat Inglis made 20 saves for LSSU in the victory, as his counterpart Bothwell totaled 17 saves.
The Warriors and Lakers will meet again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Fans who attend the Wayne State-Ferris State football game at noon will receive free admission at the Coliseum with their football ticket stub.
