DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (0-6-1 overall, 0-2-1 CHA) suffered a 4-1 setback at home Friday night to the Bemidji State University Beavers (6-1-0, 2-1-0 CHA) in the Warriors home opener at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
The evening started out promising for WSU as junior forward Mark Cannon (River Rouge, Mich./Compuware) banged in an Adam Krug (Livonia, Mich./Sioux City Musketeers) shot that rang off the goalpost at the 11:44 mark. Krug started the scoring play by winning an offensive zone face-off and freshman winger Jon Grabarek (Sterling Hts., Mich./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) earned his first collegiate point by tipping the puck past a BSU defender to Krug inside the dot.
Cannon's first of the season proved to be the only goal of the opening stanza as WSU held a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal in the frame.
The Beavers tied the score 5:48 into the middle period as Luke Erickson, stationed at the left point, one-timed a cross-ice pass from Tyler Scofield past WSU netminder Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders). Andrew Martens also assisted on BSU's five-on-three power-play goal.
Less than five minutes later while Wayne State had the man-advantage, a Warrior turnover behind their net allowed Lou Garritan to score the game-winning goal unassisted at the 10:26 mark.
BSU carried the play in the second period and recorded a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Neither team was able to score over the next 29 minutes following Garritan's marker as referee Brett Klosowski called a total of 11 penalties in a span of 9:39 starting at the 5:54 mark of the third period.
Bemidji's Jake Bluhm scored an empty-net goal with 38 seconds remaining and Ryan Huddy added a goal with 17 seconds left to conclude the scoring.
Hooper made 19 saves in the Wayne State net, while Beaver goaltender Matt Climie was credited with 25 stops.
WSU went zero-for-eight on the power play, with BSU scoring once in five chances.
The teams conclude the weekend set with a 7:05 p.m. face-off Saturday night at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
