Detroit - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (0-7-1 overall, 0-3-1 CHA) battled the 18th-ranked Bemidji State Beavers (7-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 CHA) nearly even for the second straight night only to come up short in the end as BSU completed a sweep with a 3-1 win Saturday night at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
In an evenly played first period that saw only two minor penalties and WSU holding a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal neither team was able to light the lamp.
BSU held an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal in the middle period and outscored WSU 2-1 in the frame.
After Wayne State killed off back-to-back Bemidji power plays, the Beavers struck first at the 8:18 mark on a goal by Rob Sirianni. Ryan Miller's shot was stopped by WSU goalie Matt Kelly (Hull, Mass./Topeka Scarecrows) but Jake Bluhm gathered in the rebound, fed the puck behind the net to Sirianni who walked out to Kelly's left and roofed a shot.
Late in a Warrior power play, freshman defenseman Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) was assessed a penalty and BSU scored 66 seconds into the man-advantage for a 2-0 lead. Matt Pope redirected an Andrew Martens blueline shot at the 13:54 mark into the top corner past Kelly. Luke Erickson earned the second assist on the eventual game-winner.
Wayne State pulled within a goal with 1:58 remaining in the middle stanza as junior forward Jason Baclig (Leamington, Ont./Leamington Flyers) scored his second of the campaign. Sophomore forward Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Greys) earned his first assist of the year by sending the puck out his defensive zone and having a BSU blueliner mishandle it in the neutral zone allowing Baclig to pick up the loose puck.
The Warriors best chance to tie the game came just past the mid point following a power-play shot off the post by the Beavers Ryan Huddy. Just seconds later, WSU's Nate Higgins (Calgary, Alb./Green Bay Gamblers) had a short-handed breakaway but was unable to get the puck past BSU goalie Layne Sedevie.
Higgins also had a shot in the final minute turned aside by Sedevie's mask.
Bemidji's Ryan Miller sealed the road win with an empty-net goal with two seconds remaining.
Kelly made 22 saves in the Warrior cage, while Sedevie stopped 15 WSU shots.
Wayne State went zero-for-five on the power play, while Bemidji State scored once in seven man-advantage opportunities.
The Warriors are idle until traveling to Union College for a post-Thanksgiving series on Nov. 25-26.
