Moon Twp., Pa. - The Wayne State University men's hockey team (6-3-1 overall, 1-0-1 CHA) played its first overtime game and lowest scoring game of the season Saturday night at Robert Morris University (2-6-1 overall, 0-3-1 CHA) as the squads skated to a 1-1 tie which included a five-minute sudden-victory extra session.
For the fourth time in five weekends, the Warriors won the first game of the series but could not claim a victory in the series finale.
The tie was Wayne State's first since a 1-1 draw against the Findlay Oilers on Feb. 22, 2004.
WSU trailed the host Colonials 1-0 heading into the third period but scored the equalizer when freshman right wing Tylor Michel (Sudbury, Ont./Owen Sound Greys) ripped a shot past the Colonial netminder just 75 seconds into the third period. Michel's third goal of the season was assisted by sophomore left wing Jason Baclig (Leamington, Ont./Leamington Flyers) and sophomore defenseman Dan Iliakis (Scarborough, Ont./Georgetown Raiders).
Robert Morris took a 1-0 lead when Logan Bittle scored at the 15:14 mark of the second period.
After being outshot 8-7 in the opening period, WSU held advantages in the final three periods (17-6 in the second period, 14-5 in the third period and 3-2 in overtime). One of Wayne State's three overtime shots came during a two-minute power play in the extra session.
Warrior sophomore netminder Will Hooper (Woodbridge, Ont./Wexford Raiders) made 20 saves including two in overtime. RMU goalie Christian Boucher was credited with 40 stops including three in overtime.
WSU went 1-3 on the power play and stopped all five of Robert Morris' man-advantage opportunities.
Wayne State begins a stretch of four games in six days this Thursday when the Bowling Green Falcons visit the Compuware Sports Arena in game one of a home-and-home series. Face-off is slated for 7:05 p.m. Thursday in Plymouth. The weekend set concludes with a 5:05 p.m. face-off Saturday night in BG. WSU plays its first two home league games on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 22-23 against the Bemidji State Beavers. Face-off both nights at Compuware will be at 7:05 p.m.
