DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (1-7-1, 0-3-0 CHA) dropped a 3-1 decision to College Hockey America rival Bemidji State (5-5-1, 3-1-1 CHA) on Friday night at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.

Rookie forward Tyler Ruel's (Port Alberni, Alb./Alberni Valley Bulldogs) first collegiate goal was the lone highlight for the Warriors, who are still searching for their first league win of the season.

Bemidji State jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:27 into the contest on a power-play tally by Matt Pope. Graham McManamin found Joey Moggach open in the right corner, who then sent a pass across the zone to Pope for the quick shot past freshman netminder Kyle Funkenhauser (Windsor, Ont./Surrey Eagles).

Nearly 20 seconds after Dylan Exton (Calgary, Alb./Prince George Spruce Kings) blasted a shot off the crossbar, Ruel knotted the score at one at the 14:51 mark. Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) and Jordan Inglis (108 Mile Ranch, B.C./Prince George Spruce Kings) worked the puck up the right boards to Ruel, who beat a BSU defenseman and sent a wrist shot over the shoulder of BSU goaltender Matt Climie.

For Inglis, his assist on the play was his first career point.

Cody Bostock netted the eventual game-winner at 18:39 on a one-timer from Matt Read and Travis Winter, and after a scoreless second period Read capitalized on a WSU turnover in the neutral zone to give the Beavers an insurance goal at 5:47 of the final stanza.

Funkenhauser was pulled in favor of a sixth skater late in the contest, but the Warriors could not narrow the deficit.

Bemidji State held a 23-19 edge in shots on goal over Wayne State, as Climie and Funkenhauser totaled 18 and 20 saves, respectively. The Beavers also held the Warriors scoreless in six power-play chances.

The two teams will meet again Saturday at 7:05 p.m. following WSU women's hockey action at the Coliseum against Rensselaer beginning at 3:00 p.m.
