SAULT STE.MARIE, Mich. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (2-9-0) dropped a 4-2 decision at Lake Superior State (8-4-0) on Saturday evening. It marks the third straight loss for the Warriors and their sixth in the last seven games.
Nathan Perkovich scored his eighth of the season, and second of the series, on a power play at 8:26 to put the Lakers ahead, 1-0, but Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) knotted the score at 1-1 with 30 seconds remaining in the opening period. Freshmen Jared Katz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Baystate Breakers) and Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) assisted on the goal.
Lake Superior State regained the lead at 3:05 in the second period on a goal by Nik Sellers, assisted by Trent Campbell and Dominic Osman. The Lakers outshot the Warriors, 15-5, in the middle stanza.
Nate Higgins (Calgary, Alb./Green Bay Gamblers) tied the score at two with his fifth goal of the season, with helpers from Taylor Donohoe (Richmond, B.C./Powell River Kings) and Derek Punches (Manchester, Mich./Texas Tornado), at 5:07 in the third. LSSU's Troy Schwab netted the eventual game-winner, a short-handed goal at the 17:17 mark.
Trent Campbell's empty-net goal sealed the win for the Lakers.
Pat Inglis made 19 saves for the Lakers, while Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) stopped 22 Laker shots.
Wayne State will complete its four-week road trip at 12th-ranked Cornell next weekend, Nov. 25-26.
